1 In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.

The First Day – Light
3 Then God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light.
4 God saw that the light was good, and He separated the light from the darkness.
5 God called the light “Day,” and the darkness He called “Night.”

The Second Day – The Sky
6 Then God said, “Let there be a space between the waters to separate water from water.”
7 So God made the sky and separated the water under the sky from the water above it.
8 God called the space “Sky” (or “Heaven”).

The Third Day – Dry Land and Plants
9 Then God said, “Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place so that dry land may appear.” And it happened.
10 God called the dry land “Land,” and the gathered waters He called “Seas.” God saw that it was good.
11 Then God said, “Let the land produce plants: grass, seed-bearing plants, and fruit trees that bear fruit with seed in it, each according to its kind.” And it happened.
12 The land produced plants and trees, each bearing seed according to its kind. God saw that it was good.
13 There was evening, and there was morning — the third day.

The Fourth Day – Sun, Moon, and Stars
14 Then God said, “Let lights appear in the sky to separate day from night, and let them serve as signs for seasons, days, and years. (b)
15 Let them shine in the sky and give light to the earth.” And it happened.
16 God made two great lights: the greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night. He also made the stars.
17 God placed them in the sky to give light to the earth,
18 to rule over the day and the night, and to separate light from darkness. God saw that it was good.
